Food Matters - and living in Cumbria there are a great many of us who work in the hospitality trade, or have been associated with it in one way or another. Even just eating out! There is a real wealth of restaurants available here - and I know a great many Chefs locally who take a great deal of pride in sourcing their food as locally as possible, and as fresh as possible... I'll even admit to being a bit of a snob with my food when I go away from Cumbria - I know what good, fresh food tastes like.... And I like to eat locally produced foods...
There's a lot that goes on with Food locally - from the incredibly active Food Group which is responsible for the Fruity Windermere project, to the Food Challenge - a group of people sharing a regular meal and having a bit of a fun competition with it to see how local they can keep the ingredients! (If you can't keep the ingredients local, but have a great story to tell as to how it was made, or how you came to buy it from a local shop or business owner - that's acceptable within the food challenge too. Like I said - it's a fun competition!) And then there's seasonal food, recipies to be shared, macrobiotic / microbiotic cookery courses, Wild food walks, local garden shares.... Whew - quite a lot on offer really - if you're willing to get involved, or just know where to look.
Get in touch, get growing, get cooking - there's a wealth of oppertunity and possibility out there - and failing that - ask in your local restuarant - You'll find a large number of Chefs more than willing to talk to you about Sizergh Barn, or Howbarrow - or any of the other local suppliers... Best of all - a great many of these supply direct to the public, or have veg box schemes... Just ask around to find out more... And there's always local recipies to be shared...
Plenty of possibilities there...
